Salvage

A look at the opposing ends of life cycles of materials used in consumer products and our relationship with them.

Modern life seems to necessitate globalization and consumerism more than ever. As our world grows more complex, so do the materials we rely on to advance it. The life cycle of these materials is just as complex, embodying the intricate relationship between human ingenuity, nature, and environmental impact.

This book documents the latter portion of the life cycle that I feel best reflects the slow process of deterioration and renewal that these materials undergo. Pictured are various shops and industrial spaces, where products and materials will assume their finite roles in our lives. As well as a scrapyard and waste facility, where materials can either find new purpose or be disposed of, bringing an end to their life cycle.

While the passage of time and the evolving demands of utility may cast the products we rely on into obsolescence, the end of their primary lifecycle presents opportunities for transformation, reuse, and a more circular approach to material consumption.
